Born on 28 November, 1915 in Tallinn.

1931 – 1937 studied in the State School of Applied Art (teachers: A. Jansen, R. Nyman, V. Mellik)
1938 – 1940 studied painting in the State Higher School of Art (teachers: A. Jansen, J. Greenberg, V. Mellik)
1939 First public performance (Autumn Art Exhibition by the Visual Art Foundation in Tallinn)
1939 – 1940 member of the Central Union of Estonian Visual Artists
1939 – 1940 teacher of the nude drawing class in the State School of Applied Art
1939 – 1941 teacher of drawing in the State Industrial School, State Industrial Students' School, and Boys' Vocational School
1942 –1944 member of a group of Estonian artists in Yaroslavl, artist at the front
1943 founding member of the Association of Artists of Estonian SSR
1944 dean of the department of decorative and monumental painting and teacher of monumental painting and drawing in Tallinn State Applied Art Institute (as of 1951, State Art Institute of Estonian SSR)
1954 professor at the Estonian State Art Institute
1962 correspondent member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR
1963 honorary member of the Florence Art Academy, People's Artist of the USSR
